wind, fire, all that kind of thing!
This weekend I took my dad to see You Don’t Mess With the Zohan (per his suggestion).

Even though I am a religious follower of SNL (even during the debatably bad years) this is only the second Adam Sandler movie I’ve ever seen (the other being The Wedding Singer), and certainly the first one I ever paid to see in the theater.

I kind of had a morbid curiousity about it because I am a fan of co-writers Judd Apatow and Robert Smigel.

And to my surprise I liked it! A LOT!

In fact I’m going to say it’s the most enjoyable experience I’ve had at the theater this year! Yes…I liked it more than Iron Man or Kung Fu Panda.

It was like my favorite scene in Zoolander (the gasoline fight) expanded into its own movie! Just total ridiculous-ness that had me smiling from start to finish. I can’t really justify any of it except to say that it was silly awesome. But surprisingly it also had some nice anti-racial optimism mixed in with its potentially offensive racist humor!

Related note: I just watched Big Trouble in Little China again for the first time since 1986. It wasn’t as crazy as I remember, but definitely put me in the right mindset to enjoy You Don’t Mess With the Zohan even more . Much like the recent over-the-top live action cartoon nature of Speed Racer, these are the kind of movies that a lot of people will try and convince you are stupid but can be viewed as genius on their own over the top terms. Movies that get bad reviews but are crazy fun to watch with the right group of friends. When I see a guy high-fiving a seagull, or John Turturro playing ping-pong with a hand grenade while wearing a speedo, I’m totally on board.

I want to see that! I love that kind of over the top ridiculous-ness (but only the brilliant kind, not the dumb kind, which I can't explain. I can only tell you when I watch certain things which is the good kind and which is the bad kind, lol). That gasoline fight in Zoolander is the best!! Plus I really like Adam Sandler. You have never seen his more serious roles? I love Spanglish and Reign Over Me was AMAZING.

I have never seen Big Trouble in Little China!! But I do have it and have always wanted to see it!! I'll watch it soon. :)

I totally understand!

My dad is a huge fan of Spanglish so I'm sure I'll end up checking that out!

wow, comparing it to the Gasoline fight is big praise! You might have convinced me to eventually see Zohan!

My Boss Chris said he saw it with his pre-teen son and they loved it as well. So maybe it's a movie that brings parents and children together!

I agree. It looked really bad! And maybe it technically is.
But I enjoyed the hell out of myself watching it so they did something right! I'm sure it won't be the same for everyone though. I personally wasn't so into Kung Fu Panda but all of my friends are in love with it! So we all get something different out of these movies.

Hmm...I had totally written this off. But I didn't know that Apatow and Smigel were involved.

You know I have the same experience with all those Apatow movies...Knocked Up, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall...I go into them thinking, "Hmm...I liked all those other movies, and even then I had low expectations...but the previews made this one look really kinda bad...but I'm curious!" And then I end up loving them! So I guess I should give this a shot. I love Zoolander and Speed Racer!

Yeah, I'm exactly the same way! I've had to learn to stop trusting trailers.
I actually skipped Sarah Marshall because of the dumb commercials but will check it out on DVD for sure.
