Noob no more?

As of next month, I will be going into my 10th year at Nickelodeon Magazine!!! I started freelancing for them (1-2 days a week) the last week of November in 1998 while I was still in my senior year of college. By the time I graduated, I was working 5 days a week as a "permalancer" and then eventually got hired "on staff" a year or two later. Years of monthly magazines and special projects later...after even having a photo of my butt (in jeans) on the cover, I still feel like the new kid!

I can honestly say though that I've really had one of the best jobs ever. And am still completly in love with it.

The best part of being at Nick Mag for the past 9 years: I've worked with an insane amount of talented artists, writers, editors, art directors, animators, producers, and cool creative people! And looking back, I definitely feel I've learned a lot and still continue to every day.

I've been asked a lot of questions and done a lot of public speaking about "your career" and how you can "make it", which feels ironic, since I'm still a few thousand dollars shy of paying off my college loans!

But at any rate, I've been compiling a lot of this advice in one place for easier correspondences, and recently a few people insisted that I share it online. So if you are interested in that kind of stuff here you go:

Advice for building a career as a freelance artist
and/or paid cartoonist

--I'm sure a lot of the details are up for debate and I plan to add and change things over time. But I guess it might be useful for people seeking some inside tips and tricks! Cheers!

That advice is great so far. I haven't read it all. I'm actually headed out the door for some lunch at the moment. I did want to help out a bit and point out that there is a tiny typo in the small business cards section. "... Small cards are become trendy in the alternative comic scene ..." 'become' should be 'becoming.' Just trying to help out. And, heck, delete this comment after you fix it.

Hey Dave, I've been watching your livejournal for a while but I don't think I've ever poked my head in to say hello. :)

Fantastic and solid advice all around in your freelance article. Thanks for posting! :) I was wondering if you'd be able to shed some light on something I've been troubled by for a while. I just recently wrapped up my third graphic novel for Tokyopop, and I'm looking towards moving more in the direction of freelance work for magazines and book publishers. A month and a half later, I've still received very little in the way of responses, which I'm sure can be attributed to any number of factors mentioned in your article. It occurred to me though that, outside of comics, the art style I work in, very Japanese manga-inspired, is potentially a dead-end in the American publishing world. What you think? Do you think the style is so foreign that it's unusable to art directors? Or do I just need to continue sticking in there?

Anyways, thanks even if you don't have time to respond, and thanks especially for posting that article. I'll be sure to pass it around to all my artist friends. :)

Hey Lindsay,
That's a pretty good question.
I think you are right that a lot of traditional print magazines avoid an overt manga style unless it's directly related to the article or intended to be about Manga/anime etc. A lot of places seem cautious of mixing in Manga with other styles. For some reason it seems to stand out to people who haven't spent their lives digesting it. It still comes across and new and different. Except videogame magazines--which have been using manga/amime style illustrators for years.
There are a lot of anime inspired illustrators who get a lot of work though. But usually there stuff is more of a hybrid or a new take like the superflat style. http://www.kozyndan.com/ come to mind as a really successful illustration team. Looking at your stuff I can definitely say you have bankable skills so I'm surprised you aren't finding many gigs. Stuff like the “Pop Star Idols” piece seems like it would have crossover appeal. So it may really come down to just targeting specific people who do want something new that appeals to the manga generation.. I think that will be come more and more common over the next few years as manga and anime filter more and more into the eyes of westerners.

It is really a hard battle, cus there are no other comic artists in Oklahoma, so it feels like a steep uphill climb for me when I'm telling people that I draw cartoons, and other artists in OK paint and do really nice works of art.

that article, tho, lifts my spirits a lot. thank you dave!
