Which ones did you get?
Happy FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!

I got these:

Sadly the local comic shop (in my subway station) didn't really take advantage of the fact that it was a beautiful day and there were tons of parents and kids running around the neighborhood. They only had one a poster saying "free comic book day" that wasn't visable until you were already walking in the door. It would have been nice if they had a bigger display outside or on the street that encouraged pedestrian traffic to stop in and check out all the free cool stuff. But then I would have also recommended they organized the store a bit better and cleaned the place up to be a bit more welcoming to kids and parents in the first place. Why can't all stores be like ROCKETSHIP?

I fear that the only people who take advantage of Free Comic Book Day are people who already frequent comic shops. Which is good for convincing fanboys to try new things but doesn't further expand the readership of the medium (which I think was the original plan).

The comic shop I go to opted out, since the people who came were either a) Regular Customers, or b) People looking for Free Comics, and only Free Comics. Who tended to never go back.... well, until next Free Comic Book Day.

Though they did give me a discount on some trading figures today, which turned out to be the 2 Dororo Enma-Kun figures from the set. Which was keen.

Free Comic Book Day is usually the day after the premiere of a big comic movie, like Spider-man 3, I'm guessing they're hoping that some of the movie watchers will drop by the comic store the next day?

I had to order them online, a pay a few cents for them and I don't know when I'll get them either... :/

Clearly the rest of the world is unspeakably lame and your only course of action is to move to Toronto. Hopefully we will have pictures of the dozen artists and hundreds of patrons thronging the patio outside the store up in not too long. We even had to take over the front steps next door and the patio of the restaurant on the other side. Pretty hectic but only an hour and a half more before the celebratory drinks phase of the day. I'll raise one to all the people who should have been here.

i knew i should've gone to rocketship. instead i tagged along on some family chores and hit up a shop in bellmore. got the spiderman, legion of superheros, gi joe, sonic the hedgehog, archie, umbrella academy, and tokyopop sampler FCDB books, along with the first three issues of Buffy Season 8 (paid for and totally worth it).

hopefully i'll be able to find that Comics Festival 2007 somewhere later on. too many good artists in there, and not enough stores loving the awesome indies. my li'l sis was sad that the store we went to didn't have any non-superhero books.

Rocketship's Free Comic Book Day was probably the easiest and most pleasant I've been to. A bunch of the other stores, you couldn't even get into. It was a nice day to walk from store to store today!

I saw tons of little kids at the stores I went to today. They seemed to really get excited about Owly and Amelia Rules. Which is pretty cool.

My local comic store had mostly just old comics no one wanted from a few months ago. The only actual "Free Comic Day" issued releases were Virgin's sample issue and Tokyo Pop's "Choose Your Weapon." I wanted Owly and Umbrella Academy, at least...

Yeah, Rocketship did Free Comic Book Day pretty damn well. Before I got there, I kinda planned on going into the city to hit all the shops, but in the end, there was zero need.

I went to the Meltdown Comics event that Tokyopop did, to see Rikki and Tavi (and I was excited to see them carrying Jax in good quantity! Yous well represented on da west coast ;)) and I picked up Legions, the Tokyopop "choose your weapon" and JFish's special hour comic. It was SO awesome finally getting to meet Rikki and Tavisha. It was very funny when the conversation turned to you, btw, because i mentioned that I got to help out a smidge on the article and we were talking about how many kinds of awesomes you are ;)

Just wanted to let yas know :)

aww, thanks for the kind words :)

I went to Meltdown about 3 years ago and thought is was really rad. They had a videogame themed rock concert in their back parking lot!

meltdown IS really rad. They have a gallery in the back that i only briefly got to look through. It had sooo much stuff though. My primary mission was to find Jax! Hehehe

Hey dave-

We kinda focus on neighborhood kids (handing out tons of buttons to elementary school kids and teachers, pushing "word of mouth" with parents, focusing on kid-friendly stuff in the window displays for FCBD), so we tended to see A LOT of kids that aren't regulars.

So as far as "the only people who take advantage of Free Comic Book Day are people who already frequent comic shops", I think you are very correct in some cases... but it's a matter of marketing. It can be that you get new folks in the store, if you make it a friendly enough and inviting event, rather than a "get this must-have spidey comic that ties into an upcoming spidey storyline that only makes sense if you read spidey already!" kinda thing.

I would say that 85% of the people who came by for FCBD were people we've never seen before, and were trying out a a comic shop for the first time. Which is great.
