| Help SLG by helping yourself to great comics! |
[Nov. 19th, 2009|08:21 pm] |

from evandorkin "SLG Publishing is having an across-the-line, no coupon necessary, 40% off everything sale for the next week or so. A tough economy and some financial curve balls have made the sale necessary in an attempt to put some coins in the coffer, wind in the sails, eggs in the basket, etc, etc, whatever the hell. SLG, as most of you know, has more or less been my publishing home for the past 20 years or so, so I'm of course hoping for the best for them during these times of hardship."
So now is the perfect time to buy some graphic novels for holiday gifts and help a great company stay in business! Besides publishing Agnes Quill: An Anthology of Mystery, they also put out books by many of my favorite cartoonists including Evan Dorkin, Andy Ristaino, Andi Watson, Jhonen Vasquez, Andy Ristaino, Faith Erin Hicks, Gene Yang, Derek Hunter, Scott Roberts, Jamie Smart, Sonny Liew, Jim Rugg and countless more! Not to mention those cool Disney comics like Haunted Mansion, Gargoyles and Wonderland (which I thought featured some of the best art in comics).
The SLG web store also sells lots of toys, statues t-shirts, prints, and even books from various other comics publishers. So you should definitely check it out! Give the gift of comics! |

| King Con |
[Nov. 9th, 2009|12:17 pm] |

I posted some photos from this weekend's King Con in Brooklyn.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/daveandraina/sets/72157622768312930/
This was NYC's newest indie comic show, and for a first-year con, it seemed like a success! It was held at the Brooklyn Lyceum, which is sort of like a rundown cathedral that sells muffins and puts on zine fests. The unisex bathrooms added to the punk rock vibe (but could become an issue if this show grows). Raina and I were only there on Sunday, but everyone seemed in good spirits and excited about the future. People told me turnout had been a better on Saturday but that sales still seemed to be good overall.
It’s cool that friends like Allan Norico and Alisa Harris benefited from the smaller room and got to be among the stand-out cartoonist! We picked up both of their new books which are fantastic!

| | Combination Taco Bell & Pizza Hut | ] |

This year confirmed for me that Small Press Expo is officially the BEST all-around comics convention for people who truly love reading and making comics.
Our drive down in our brand new car (named Ponyo) was smooth as could be. We stopped at Pizza Hut along the way so John could cash in a gift card. Breadsticks were consumed by all. It inspired us to sing the song about combination Taco Bells and Pizza Hut for the rest of the weekend.
Even anti-social people who opt to hide up in their hotel room (like myself) have to admit having everything in one place, really makes for a warm and inviting experience (even when the air-conditioning is cranked up!) And after three years, the hotel itself and even the neighborhood has really grown on me.
Attendance seemed to be the best I'd ever seen at any SPX. Which was surprising because the show had no major celebrities (ala Frank Miller or Jeff Smith) as guests (no offense to Gahan Wilson, Carol Tyler and R. Sikoryak --all of whom I love!)
The Comics Bakery and especially Life Meter 3 did VERY well. I talked to a lot of newer cartoonists who cleaned up…and web superstars like Kate Beaton seemed to always have a line around their table. Based on passing anecdotes, the people who seemed to have the more modest sales were the bigger publishers.
On Sunday, it was very, very cold. But I'll take that over the lack of circulation and hotness of MoCCA any day. Especially when you can just go up to your room and get an extra layer to put on. Also SPX is the only comics show in town that gives free coffee and tea to all guests! Not to mention lots of drink tickets handed out by the convention organizers and elaborate spreads of free food at several points throughout the weekend. It’s fun seeing how cartoonists and college kids react to the chocolate fountain and free finger foods with uncontrollably glee. Even the Ignatz award show is a low-key, but often hilarious time to celebrate some of the great works of on the indy side of comics.
And best of all the amount of talent squeezed into a single room is still staggering. And there’s always delightful surprises every few tables. Lots of creativity and craftiness abound. I was happy to discover the works of Pranas Naujokaitis, whose “Beard” and “Boxcar Joe” minis were two of the most unique and clever homemade comics I’ve bought in a while. Also got some cool minis by Dustin Harbin, Kevin Bolk, Curt Franklin and Chris Haley. Colleen AF Venable and everyone at the Lumberjack comic table seemed to be having non-stop fun and hijinks all weekend long, handing out tiny axes and fake beards for all who purchased their anthology. The Comics Bakery had fresh cookies baked by the amazing Gina Gagliano, and our comics and snacks combo seemed to inspire lots of others to bust out their cooking skills, including a hooded Cinna-bomber passing out free cinnamon rolls! All of this just added to the good will and good times that are unique to the SPX experience. My thanks to all the organzers and volunteers. I’m already looking forward to next year!

| Todd Webb and friends in Robbert Bobbert video |
[Sep. 24th, 2009|05:32 pm] |
Speaking of SPX and music...One of my favorite people to hang out with at SPX is Todd Webb He's a great musician in his own right, but he also just did the art and packaging for the new Robbert Bobbert CD, which I highly recommend. Robbert Bobbert is a character and album created by Robert Schneider of The Apples in Stereo.
The new music video, We R Super Heroes includes art by Jordan Crane (The Clouds Above, NON), Gene Ha (Top 10, The Fourty Niners), Craig McCracken (Powerpuff Girls, Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends), Chris McDonnell (Meat Haus, Vice Comics), Mark Todd (Whatcha Mean, What’s a Zine?) and Todd Webb (Tuesday Moon, Nickelodeon Magazine). |

| SPX! |
[Sep. 24th, 2009|01:32 pm] |
I'm really looking forward to this weekend's Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland. SPX was the first full-on indy comics show I ever went to and I have countless fond memories from over the years. The comics, the people, the drawing jams, the free food, the drink tickets, the hijinks!
A lot people still pine for the old Sunday barbecue in the park and softball game that made the comics show so unique. But what I really miss is the Friday night rock show! The first year I attended there was a concert in the hotel Friday night with James Kochalka Superstar (first time I ever saw him or his penis!) and at least 2 other cartoonists that happened to be musicians. A year or two later Abby Denson's band played with a bunch of rocker cartoonists down the block. Certainly new traditions have popped up over the years like Karaoke and Nerdlinger awards. But I miss the rock!
Anyways, I'm sure SPX will still be an amazing time. And I recommend everyone who CAN go, SHOULD.
More info: Small Press Expo is September 26 and 27 in scenic Bethesda, MD! The Comics Bakery will be stationed at tables H7-H8. marionv made us a handy info-graphic, to show our table placement:

I'll be debuting a new (full color!) volume of Life Meter:

Raina will have a new issue of her hilarious Outreach series and Marion Vitus will have a zombie mini!
Raina is also selling the 7 original X-Men drawings which you can see here and holding a raffle for advance-reader galleys of SMILE!
And that's just US! There will be hundreds of the best cartoonists in the world all hanging out in one cozy hotel! |

| September stuff to do |
[Sep. 10th, 2009|04:01 pm] |
Upcoming events!

Sunday, September 13, I will be at the The Brooklyn Book Festival! It's a huge, free event taking over much of downtown Brooklyn. You can find Raina at the Youth Stoop in Borough Hall Plaza--the Youth Stoop provides day-long literary activities for youth ages 10-18. This is the panel I'm speaking on:
12:00 pm -1:00 pm. Sci Fi and Fantasy in NYC Join authors S.C. Butler, Peter Brett, Anton Strout and Dave Roman as they discuss all that is paranormal in NYC.
Immediately after, I'll be signing & selling stuff.
Raina also has a panel at 3:00 called "Love, War and Adventures in Babysitting…Transforming Stories into Comics."
---

The following weekend, September 19 and 20, Raina and I will be heading up to Bangor, Maine as special guests of the BangPop! Comic Book & Pop Culture Convention, at the Bangor Civic Center. The programming isn't completely current on the site yet, but we'll be giving one panel for educators and librarians, and another for kids. I'll post an update with specific information when I have it. Note that current full-time educators and librarians will receive free admission to BangPop! with current school ID. Raina and I have never been to Maine before but have read about it in comics by Matt Loux. I expect talking lobsters.
---

And then the last weekend in September, look for the entire Comics Bakery at one of our favorite conventions: the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, MD! We'll be debuting Life Meter 3 and Raina will have a new issue of Outreach available. Of course we will have plenty of copies of X-Men: Misfits on hand. |

| The people I worked with |
[Sep. 8th, 2009|03:48 pm] |
Crossposted to nickmag_comics

From the September 2009 issue of Nickelodeon Magazine (on newsstands now). An amazing group of people to work with! I will always be grateful for the time I got to spend with them being creative and doing fun stuff for a living. I couldn't be more proud to have been a part of Nick Mag and it still hasn't sunk in how my life will be changed forever without it. Not to mention the thousands of kids who will miss the concept of "funny magazines you can read offline".
There are still 3 more issues remaining (final issue will be December 2009) but this will be the last time we do one of our full mastheads, since only 9 of the people pictured are still in the office.
I'm part of the small skeleton crew sending Nick Mag off to magazine heaven. My last day is October 22nd. |

| X-Men in the newspapers! |
[Aug. 27th, 2009|01:09 pm] |
X-Men: Misfits gets some coverage in today's AM NY!

This is especially exciting to me, because I read this free newspaper EVERY morning on the train to work!
You can read a new interview with Raina and I on their website: http://www.amny.com/the-tangent-1.811947/x-men-misfits-the-mutants-go-manga-1.1396756
Also exciting is that the book debuted at #6 on the NY Times Best Selling Graphic Books!

So I think that means I can tell my parents that Raina and I are NY Times Bestselling authors!
Don't forget that Raina and I are having a release party at Rocketship in Brooklyn tomorrow. There will be cupcakes and beer (and of course, books)! |

| Pretty mutants hit the street! |
[Aug. 11th, 2009|09:40 am] |
X-Men: Misfits is finally in book stores! And in comic shops tomorrow!

So far, the advanced word is good!
Active Anime: "At last an Original English Language manga (OEL) that gets it bang on right! And it’s X-Men Misfits. As a diehard X-Men fan (I collected the comics since the early 80s) I was curious but skeptical on how an OEL version would revision it. The story and art surprised and thrilled me. It manages to work in enough details about the various Marvel mutants to please hard core fans while delighting them with the new takes on many, many favorite names."
Publishers Weekly: "Telgemeier and Roman deliver a delightful script that will appeal to old fans while being friendly toward new readers or fans of the X-Men films. The art by Anzu (The Reformed) is over-the-top shojo parody, with lots of screentone and flowers."
I hope you'll give it a shot, and have us much fun reading it as we did making it! Mutant fistbumps to our collaborator, Anzu, and to our editor, Tricia as well as everyone at Del Rey and Marvel!
If you're going to be in the neighborhood, Raina and I will be at the official Book Release Party at Rocketship on Friday, August 28th. I believe there will be cupcakes.
