| Gotta any plans for next week? |
[Jul. 17th, 2008|03:35 pm] |

I will be all over the San Diego Comic Con! Here's where to look:
Base of Operations: The Comics Bakery P2, in the Small Press section. That lines up with aisle 1900, at the very edge of Small Press, so we should be pretty easy to find! Look for the Comics Bakery banner! Also tabling there are fan-favorites like Raina Telgemeier, John Green and Marion Vitus. We’ll have a sampling of comics, zines, T-shirts, buttons, original art, handshakes, and hi-fives.
Summer home: SLG Publishing If you don’t already have a copy of Agnes Quill, this is the place to get it! And I’ll draw you something in your book if you come by SLG Thurs. 12-2PM, Fri. and Sat. 2-3PM Sun. 12:30-2PM.
Moving Castle: FLIGHT comics The booth number is: 1228 and it will be HUGE! Volume 5 (which has a story by me!) debuts there and should fly like hotcakes with jetpacks. I’ll be stopping by for regular visits to sign and sketch my cares away.
Farewell party: FRIDAY NIGHT 7:30-9:15 Nickelodeon Avatar: Sozin's Comet Come out and celebrate the series finale of Avatar the Last Airbender by watching the screening with the show’s creators and fans. I’m so there! Room 6CDEF
Community service: SUNDAY at 10:30-11:30 Kids Draw! Join a great lineup of kids' cartoonists as they draw their hearts out - right in front of you! Cartoonists including Nick Abadzis (Laika), Debbie Huey (Bumperboy) Johane Matte (Flight Explorer), Scott Morse (Visitations), Andy Runton (Owly), Kean Soo (Jellaby), and Dave Roman (Nickelodeon) will create art as you watch - with your help! Room 30CDE
Looking at the comic con programming there’s a billion panels I wouldn’t mind checking out like Chowder and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack (Sunday 1:00-2:30) and the spotlight on Floyd Norman (Thurs 5-6) But I will HOPEFULLY be too busy at the booths! These shows go by too quick! |

FLIGHT 5 will be debuting at the San Diego Comic Con!
Here is a sneak peek at my story called "The Chosen Ones Club".
The story plays off my frustration that so many books and movies try to convince us their main character is awesome simply because they are "The Chosen One". What if the choosers were suspect and all the "Chosen Ones" out there ended up competing for the same "hero's journey"?

The main characters in The Chosen Ones Club are named after Scott Hinze, Britta Hinze, and Oliver Tull, from Fan Boy Radio, which I listened to a LOT while working on the pages. And I never would have finished on time, without the color help of Alison Wilgus, Alisa Harris, Colleen MacIsaac, Jamie Dee Galey, Lisa Jonte, Naseem Hrab, and Shelli Paroline!
***EDIT: I just realized I didn't include Marion Vitus in my list of people who helped color!!! Marion I OWE you!! |

| My hair stars in in a video... |
[Jul. 7th, 2008|12:16 pm] |
Somehow, I was asked by the school's alumni department to be in a new commercial for the School of Visual Arts (even though I'm still paying off my school loan!)
http://www.hillmancurtis.com/index.php?/film/watch/sva_david/
It's 1 of 3 videos focusing on different graduates, directed by Hillman Curtis. My scene was shot in my favorite comic shop, Rocketship, (which is co-owned by fellow SVA alumni Alex Cox) and my wife, Raina (who I met at SVA) also makes a cameo. The kid I'm talking with is the director's son who was showing off his sketchbook of original comic characters! |

As I've mentioned, I've been completely reworking and expanding Hakata Soy's introduction to Astronaut Elementary. This week's page really shows how different the new pages are from the original version!

| the DIY traveling summer camp circus is coming to town! |
[Jun. 27th, 2008|01:00 pm] |
If you go to any of the Harry and the Potter's summer shows (like the one tonight at Bowery Ballroom or tomorrow at Southpaw) be sure to pick up a copy of the official tour zine:

It features a 10-page comic that breaks the cardinal rule of never writing yourself into fan fiction!

It's all part of the Potter's big Unlimited Enthusiasm Expo! Camp fires! Songs about being a wizard! Giant monsters! Cool big videos! Rock and roll aerobics! Inflatable monkeys! Dancing sock puppets! Going bananas! Circus tents! Jumping! Yelling! More jumping! With Uncle Monsterface and Math the Band!

This weekend I took my dad to see You Don’t Mess With the Zohan (per his suggestion).
Even though I am a religious follower of SNL (even during the debatably bad years) this is only the second Adam Sandler movie I’ve ever seen (the other being The Wedding Singer), and certainly the first one I ever paid to see in the theater.
I kind of had a morbid curiousity about it because I am a fan of co-writers Judd Apatow and Robert Smigel.
And to my surprise I liked it! A LOT!
In fact I’m going to say it’s the most enjoyable experience I’ve had at the theater this year! Yes…I liked it more than Iron Man or Kung Fu Panda.
It was like my favorite scene in Zoolander (the gasoline fight) expanded into its own movie! Just total ridiculous-ness that had me smiling from start to finish. I can’t really justify any of it except to say that it was silly awesome. But surprisingly it also had some nice anti-racial optimism mixed in with its potentially offensive racist humor!
Related note: I just watched Big Trouble in Little China again for the first time since 1986. It wasn’t as crazy as I remember, but definitely put me in the right mindset to enjoy You Don’t Mess With the Zohan even more . Much like the recent over-the-top live action cartoon nature of Speed Racer, these are the kind of movies that a lot of people will try and convince you are stupid but can be viewed as genius on their own over the top terms. Movies that get bad reviews but are crazy fun to watch with the right group of friends. When I see a guy high-fiving a seagull, or John Turturro playing ping-pong with a hand grenade while wearing a speedo, I’m totally on board.

Speaking of gay marriage...
Check out the recent cover art I did for Wizards and Muggles Rock for Social Justice Volume 2!

This follow up to Volume 1 features new music by Harry and the Potters, The Whomping Willows, The Remus Lupins (all represented on the cover), and a bunch of other notables in the Wizard Rock pro-social scene.
Proceeds from this CD will aid the HP Alliance, an organization that encourages using the themes of Harry Potter to achieve educational and humanitarian goals..AND Marriage Equality Rhode Island, a grassroots movement that seeks legal recognition of same-sex couples through civil marriage in Rhode Island.
The music should be up on Itunes soon, I think with a real life CD to follow.
And if you go to see Harry and the Potters on tour this summer this art will be animated as part of their "Wizard ROCK THE VOTE" videos shown on stage! |

| This Weekend |
[Jun. 4th, 2008|03:57 pm] |
This weekend is one of the best events of the year: the MoCCA Art Festival!
Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8 The Puck Building: Houston and Lafayette Streets New York, New York 11 AM - 6 PM both days $10 a day or $15 for a weekend pass
Myself and the the Comics Bakery will be set up at tables A7 and A8, the same spot we've been in for the past several years. We will have our usual crazy assortment of comics and art and baked goods!
We will also have contributions on what will be the MOST TALKED ABOUT mini-comic debuting at the show:

Edited by Shelli Paroline, Harvest Is When I Need You the Most is a comic anthology that captures the nostalgic value of the ORIGINAL Star Wars Trilogy! And it's in full color!
Raina and I collaborated on a story about R2 D2 and Wicket the Ewok (total BFFs!)

Much like Life Meter 2 last year, this book is guaranteed to sell out, so don't wait till the end of the show to pick one up! It will make a great present for your geeky relatives who still need that extra push to start reading indy comics! |

| back to school |
[May. 22nd, 2008|12:47 am] |
I've finally started updating Astronaut Elementary again!

The pages currently being serialized act as an extended opening sequence to the entire story. Originally, Hakata was introduced in a simple 2-page comic, but I've gone back and expanded it to 15 pages to better establish the school environment and introduce readers to the world. These new pages also have cold graytones to add to the overall space-iness . Best of all (as far as my wrist is concerned), it's all lettered with my new custom font which was made by Mr. crypticpress! |

If you or anyone you know works for a hospital, library, school, non-profit that would like a package of FREE Nickelodeon Magazines please send me an email at david(dot)roman(at)mtv.com
Nickelodeon Magazine began a really great tradition of sending our old issues of Nick Mag to some women's shelters and underpriveleged schools on the Southside of the city. We have plenty of extra magazines that could and should be enjoyed by kids who would otherwise not have access to reading materials like these.
Thank you so much for your help. |
